Matcha vs Coffee: Caffeine, L-Theanine and Calmer Energy

Both wake you up, but they don't feel the same. Here's how matcha and coffee compare on caffeine — and why matcha is so often described as 'calm alertness.'

Matcha and coffee are the two great morning rituals, and people who switch often describe the change in the same way: less jittery, more even. Some of that is habit and expectation — but some of it is chemistry. Here's a measured look at how they differ.

Caffeine, roughly compared

A standard bowl of matcha (about 2 grams) contains meaningfully less caffeine than a typical mug of drip coffee, though the exact numbers vary a lot with serving size, grade and how you brew. In practice, matcha usually lands somewhere between green tea and coffee. So it's not caffeine-free — it will wake you up — it just tends to deliver a gentler dose.

The L-theanine difference

The more interesting distinction is an amino acid called L-theanine, which green tea contains and coffee essentially doesn't. L-theanine is widely associated with a sense of relaxed focus, and it's frequently studied alongside caffeine because the two together are popularly described as producing "calm alertness" — the alert part without as much of the edge. Because matcha is shade-grown, it's especially rich in L-theanine.

Why the energy "feels" different

With matcha, many people report a steadier lift and a softer come-down rather than a spike and crash. Whisking the whole leaf into water (rather than filtering it, as with coffee) also means you're drinking everything in the leaf, which may slow how the caffeine is felt. None of this makes matcha a health cure — it's a drink, not a medicine — but it does explain why the experience is calmer for a lot of people.

If you want to switch

  • Start with a matcha latte if you're used to milky coffee — it's the easiest bridge.
  • Use a premium or ceremonial grade; culinary grade can taste harsh on its own.
  • Whisk into water just off the boil (around 75°C), not fully boiling, to avoid bitterness.
  • Have it earlier in the day — it's gentler than coffee, but it's still caffeine.
